A crematorium in Durham, England is installing turbines that will take advantage of the heat from its burners, to generate up to 150 kilowatt-hours of electricity per corpse - enough to power an average American house for around five days.
While the system could see further adoption in England, it’s unlikely to be cost effective in the US quite yet, due to the number of cremations:
”Cremation in some parts of Europe is over 90 percent, but it is not over 50 percent yet here.” That is, less than half of Americans opt for cremation. Most are buried.
